UNBC Sexual Violence and Misconduct Policy: Updates

Posted by on Jul 13, 2017 in News, Student Life, UNBC | 0 comments

Tierney Watkinson | News Director   In May of this year, UNBC enacted a Sexual Violence and Misconduct Policy. The policy is a response to the instigation of Bill 23, put in place by the Liberals as British Columbia’s previous governing party. Bill 23 was introduced by Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver earlier last year. “The introduction of this act fulfills the promise by the Premier to introduce legislation along the lines of my private member’s Bill M205: Post-Secondary Sexual Violence Policies Act,” Weaver stated on his website in April 2016. Bill 23 decrees that: “A post-secondary institution must establish and implement a sexual misconduct policy that (a) addresses sexual misconduct, including sexual misconduct prevention and responses to sexual misconduct, (b) sets out procedures for the following: (i) making a complaint of sexual misconduct involving a student; (ii) making...

Sam Wall | Editor In Chief   This past Monday, the call was put out for speakers for TEDxUNBC. The event, occurring on September 30th, will take inspiration directly from TED and other similarly inspired events, called TEDx. The theme for UNBC’s conference will be dispelling misconceptions, giving speakers the opportunity to demonstrate what Prince George has to offer. The conference will be the first of its kind at UNBC. The goal of TEDxUNBC is to highlight the incredible talent and knowledge held within UNBC and the wider Prince George community. The theme of dispelling misconceptions is a fitting one, as residents are quite familiar with the common of misconceptions of their city. From most dangerous city in Canada to daily pulp mill smells, residents are used to pointing out the benefits of Prince George, such as exciting research...

UNBC Musicals: Another Year

Posted by on Mar 29, 2017 in Arts, Culture, UNBC, Volume 23 | 0 comments

Tierney Watkinson | Team Member   Another year has come and gone for UNBC’s Musical Productions group. As I write this, we have four more shows to perform. Last week, we had a few glitches with the set during our first show but the musical has really come together. This week of shows will be our best yet. For this article, painfully aware that I am still neglecting to mention a number of members who also worked tirelessly to make these shows a reality, I wanted to give shout-outs to the Musical Production Club’s Technical Crew. To Carmen Campbell, who played piano for the AVPS show and who has been a member of the club since the very beginning. She has starred as a crazed fan in Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Buffy the Vampire Slayer herself in the club’s...

NUGSS/Senate/BOG Election

Colin Slark | Editor in Chief The votes are in for the 2017 NUGSS Board elections and it seems that undergraduate students are looking to put in place oversight for their student government. Erik Searle, who proposed the concept of an oversight board to student at last month’s Extraordinary General Meeting in response to last year’s news about financial mismanagement and large debts the society has incurred, defeated outgoing Associate Director of Events and antiOversight Board candidate David Schroeter to become the new NUGSS President by a margin of 311 votes for Searle to 113 votes for Schroeter. When reading results for the election, it is important to note that in a bid to reduce costs associated with paying directors, students voted in last month’s EGM to reduce the amount of directors on the NUGSS board from 11 to...

Raychill Snider Raychill is a 4th year Environmental Studies Major originally hailing from Ottawa, Ontario. Raychill chose to attend UNBC because of its mantra of being Canada’s Green University. Over her years spent here in Prince George, she has immersed herself into the green community that UNBC offers, having spent time as co-president of the club Students for a Green University, manager of the SGU Dome Greenhouse, the Green Resident Assistant, and the Sustainability Representative on the NUGSS board for the past school year. She loves supporting the local and unique amenities that UNBC offers, and she can often be seen hanging out at the Farmers’ Market, picking up a good food box, or enjoying a nice cold sleeve of Canterbury (or two) at The Thirsty Moose Pub. Raychill did spent the past year on the NUGSS board, and...
